When to Replace a Hot Water Tank

If you need to replace your hot water tank, you may need to change other features too. For example, connecting to the mains means removing your regular boiler for a combi or system one. While it’s possible to connect to the mains with a regular boiler, it’s not as efficient.

However, you do not need to replace your current boiler or cold water tank when you change your hot one. But how do you know when to replace a hot water tank?

Damage is visible on the unit
If the unit requires frequent maintenance
Rumbling noises are coming from the unit
Rust is found in your water
Sediment is at the bottom of the unit
The water isn’t as hot anymore
There is corrosion around the water lines or unit

If your hot water tank has reached its end, it’s time to replace it. But before installing a new tank, you need to remove the old one, which comes at a charge. Depending on its size and location, the standalone hot water tank removal cost is around £135.

However, to remove your hot water tank and install a new boiler instead, you’re looking at an estimated £2,800. If you opt to keep your boiler and cold water tank, a new hot water tank costs between £300 and £1,200.

How Long Does It Take to Remove a Hot Water Tank?

It typically takes just a few hours to remove a hot water tank and install a new one.

However, depending on its weight and how accessible it is, and if you’re installing a new boiler instead of a hot water tank, it could take up to three days.

Hot Water Tank Removal Process

We do not recommend removing a hot water tank yourself unless you have experience in the plumbing trade. If it’s heavy or hard to access, it’s beneficial to have another person on-hand.

It’s important to note, every hot water tank removal is different. This is our typical process:

Turn on the hot water tap at any sink
Allow the hot water to cool down for 10 minutes
Turn off the tap and connect a garden hose to the tank’s drain valve
Attach the other end of the hose to a drain or bucket
Turn off the tank’s cold water supply
Open the tank’s drain valve and drain the water
Turn on the hot water tap again at any sink to help the water drain completely
Remove the garden hose once drained
Give the vent pipe time to cool down
Disconnect the vent pipe from the tank
Disconnect the cold and hot water pipes
Remove and dispose of the old tank

Hot Water Tank Replacement Process

Installing a new hot water tank is much easier than removing the old one. However, installing this incorrectly can create a sleuth of problems. As such, we recommend hiring a professional.

While every process is different, our typical hot water tank replacement goes as follows:

Clean the water and any debris from the floor
Set the new hot water tank in place
Ensure the connection pipes line up
Install the temperature and pressure relief valve
Discharge the drain pipe and any other fittings
Connect the water lines
Connect the electrical lines
Reconnect the vent
Turn the circuit breaker back on
