Common Bathroom Plumbing Problems and How to Fix Them
Bathroom plumbing problems are among the most frustrating and common issues every home has to deal with. Dripping bathroom taps and slow drains are inconvenient but also a sign of plumbing issues. Left unresolved, these problems in your bathroom can waste water and increase your bills.
In this guide, we’ll cover the most common bathroom plumbing problems, what causes them and how to fix them yourself where possible. If these issues go beyond a simple DIY solution, our expert team at GK Plumbing is here to help with our reliable bathroom plumbing services.
Dripping or Leaky Taps
The usual cause for low water pressure inside your home is restricted water flow. Whether this be due to debris, blockages, leaks, or airlocks, if your water doesn’t flow as intended, you will notice a pressure reduction. So, what are the sources?
A leaking bathroom tap is annoying due to that constant dripping sound but is also a waste of water, which adds up over time.
Causes: The main culprit of a leaky tap is a worn-out washer. Since it’s made from rubber it degrades over time. Damage to other internal fixtures such as O-rings or valves can also be the problem.
How to fix it: Replace the old worn washer or the component in the valve that has worn out. Simply take the old part with you to a diy store so you can find an exact match for your tap, then fit the new one in its place.
A dripping bathroom tap is one of the most common plumbing problems in bathrooms but is usually just a 5-minute job to fix. However, if you have no diy experience or your tap continues to drip after you’ve fixed it, it’s best to call in a professional plumber to take care of it.
Slow‑Draining Sink, Shower or Bathtub
A slow-draining shower or bathtub is one of the most common bathroom plumbing problems that many homeowners face. Nobody enjoys standing ankle-deep in soapy, dirty water, but it is often a signal of a blockage.
Causes: Slow draining water is due to a partial blockage. For showers and baths, this is mainly caused by hair, soap residue and even small objects such as razor caps. Bathroom sinks can also be blocked by hair and other types of debris.
How to fix it: The first thing to do is remove the plug or pop‑up waste for bathroom sinks and remove any trapped hair. A plunger is helpful to dislodge blockages and create a tight seal. If the water is still draining slowly, try a simple homemade solution: pour one part bicarbonate soda followed by two parts white vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
Continuously Running Toilet
Another common bathroom plumbing problem is a continuously running toilet. Not only is the constant sound a clear sign that something’s wrong, but, according to Thames Water, it can also waste an average of 400 litres of water per day.
Causes: There could be a number of causes, but the three most common are a faulty siphon, a misaligned float or an issue with the fill valve.
How to fix it: Check the siphon at the bottom of the tank. If it’s worn, cracked or not sealing properly, it may need to be cleaned or replaced. If that doesn’t solve it, take a look at the fill valve, particularly the adjustment screw, which controls the water level in the tank. Try turning the screw clockwise slightly to lower the water level, then flush the toilet to test if it stops running.
A continuously running toilet can usually be fixed with a few quick checks and small adjustments. But if the problem continues or you’re unsure about working inside the cistern, it’s worth calling in a plumber to get it sorted properly.
Low Water Pressure
Low water pressure in your bathroom sink or shower is another bathroom plumbing problem that can be frustrating, especially when it turns a quick rinse into a time-consuming task.
Causes: The most common causes include mineral build-up in aerators or showerheads, partially closed shut-off valves or even hidden leaks within the plumbing system. In older homes, corroded pipes can also contribute to pressure issues.
How to fix it: Start by unscrewing the tap aerator or showerhead and checking for any mineral deposits or debris. A soak in vinegar can help break down the buildup. Make sure all shut-off valves are fully open and that there are no visible leaks.
If the pressure is still low after these checks, it may be time to contact a plumber, especially if it’s affecting multiple fixtures or is due to corroded pipework.
Water Heater Issues
No hot water or inconsistent water temperature can quickly ruin a relaxing bath or morning shower. These are some of the more inconvenient plumbing problems in bathrooms, particularly during colder months.
Causes: Common reasons include a faulty thermostat or sediment build-up in the tank. For combination boilers, it could also be an issue with water pressure, plate heat exchanger or flow sensors.
How to fix it: For traditional water heaters, try resetting the thermostat or checking that the temperature is set correctly. If you notice popping or rumbling noises from the tank, sediment build-up may be the issue, so flushing the tank can help. For combi boilers, check pressure levels and ensure the unit is showing no error codes.
As with most boiler and heater issues, it’s best to call in a qualified plumber to diagnose and fix the problem safely.
