Signs That Your Boiler Needs Servicing

The role of your boiler is to keep your home warm and your water hot. You only realise how important it is when it’s too late. Strange noises, low temperatures and regular breakdowns are all common signs your boiler needs servicing.

In this guide we’ll cover these tell-tail signs, so you’re not left out in the cold this winter.

What is a Boiler Service?

Much like an MOT on your car, a boiler service is designed to make sure your boiler is working properly. One of our Gas Safe engineers carry out routine checks to identify any issues and ensure your boiler is running efficiently.

It’s the best way to keep your heating system healthy in the summer, and warm and cosy in the winter.

How Often Does My Boiler Need Servicing?

Your boiler should be serviced once a year. This annual service is essential for spotting potential issues before they turn into costly problems. Regular servicing helps keep your boiler running efficiently, extends its lifespan and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns. Especially during the colder months when you need it most!

When Does a New Boiler Need Servicing?

If you’ve recently had a new boiler installed, it will still need its first annual service. Most boiler manufacturers require this to maintain your warranty, and it usually takes place 12 months after installation. Having your new boiler serviced on schedule not only keeps your warranty valid but also gives you peace of mind that everything is working as it should from the very start.

7 Signs Your Boiler needs servicing?

Your boiler can have a funny way of making it known it’s in need of attention. Here’s a list of seven of the most common signs your boiler needs a service.

1. Lack of or No Heating

Cold spots or slow heating in your home may indicate your boiler needs some TLC. This can be down to issues with the thermostat, low pressure or a problem within the system itself.

2. Strange Noises

The only time your boiler should be making noise is when it starts up. Usually it should hum along quietly in the background. So, if you hear any banging, whistling or gurgling – it’s probably time for a professional eye.

3. Bad Smells

A healthy boiler shouldn’t smell. A burning or rotten egg smell could mean a gas or carbon monoxide leak. This needs attention and you should contact a professional when possible.

4. Higher Energy Bills

If your energy bills have shot up for no clear reason, your boiler might be working too hard. A regular service can improve performance and lower your energy bills.

5. Yellow or Unusual Pilot Light

Your boiler’s pilot light should be steady blue. If it’s yellow or a different colour, it could be unsafe.

6. Low Pressure

If you often need to add pressure to your boiler, it could mean a leak or another problem.

7. System Leaks

Water leaking from your boiler or pipes is a clear sign that a part is failing. Whether its a valve, seal or leak somewhere – this would be detected within your service.
